Taking a Hike

We went hiking today, exploring long trails through the hills, and enjoyed the lovely weather and sakura. Found a few shrines, and tackled some really steep hills! I always love imagining people 1000 years ago climbing the same steep hills to build these old shrines, then annually, or maybe even weekly, making the same trek up the rocks to ensure the harvests are good and evil spirits stay far from their family.

Spring Flowers!

The flowers are so amazing this year! Everything is just busting open better than previous years.

A wild Japanese cobra lily! It was stunning!

Petal Puppy

Toby unknowingly had a sakura petal stuck on his nose!

More Sakura!

We took a hike today and brought a picnic lunch to eat under the blossoms. It was so much fun! We brought Toby along too, and he had a blast exploring and meeting new people. He also wanted to play with bees.... we had to put a stop to that.

Hanami!

Sakura cookies. They tasted like a floral/cherry white chocolate macadamia cookie.

You can see a sweet elderly couple picnicking through the branches. I love this!

Sakura!

We are in the height of sakura (cherry blossom) season! Sakura is a HUGE deal here in Japan, and these gorgeous trees are treasured and revered. During this time you can find sakura themed/flavored everything - clothes, makeup, food, beer, toys, literally everything. The towns and cities decorate all the shops and sidewalks with artificial sakura branches, and everyone goes out every free chance they get to admire the trees. People here practice hanami, which means "flower viewing." For as long as the sakura is in bloom, droves of people head out every weekend to parks and picnic under groves of cherry blossoms. Friends and family gather under these gorgeous pink canopies to eat, drink, and take in the beauty that only lasts a short time. These picnics often last long into the evening, with much drinking and laughing.
It's always so exciting to see the first blooms popping open in mid March because you know spring is very near.  You can't help but be happy while gazing upon these lovely flowers, which can range from white to blush to neon pink, and every shade of pink in between.

Small memorial by our house.
